For the past two weeks we've been lucky to be joined by Issy Costello, who has been with us for work experience. Working alongside the team, Issy has contributed some excellent work towards our updated sustainability strategy, and taken part in our team gathering and accessibility lab. Here's Issy with a summary of what she's been up to.

Hello! My name is Issy, and I’ve had the opportunity to spend the past two weeks working with the team at Nexer Digital, focusing particularly on their sustainability efforts. This experience has helped me to gain an understanding of how our daily choices impact the planet and explore ways to make our workplaces more environmentally friendly. Here's what I've been up to throughout my work experience.

Week 1

My first week was focused on collecting sustainability data. After chatting with New Business Manager Amy, who is leading efforts to update Nexer's sustainability strategy, I concentrated on gathering information through a survey about the hardware used by employees both in and out of the office. This included laptops, monitors, printers, and other devices. I also collected information on the commuting habits of Nexer Digital employees, including data on their mileage and commute times.

This information was crucial in calculating the CO2 emissions associated with daily commutes, as well as the kit used in day-to-day work. The results showed the impact of different modes of transportation, offering insights into how we can encourage more sustainable commuting options.

Week 2

In the second week, I analysed the results of the survey, looking at how much energy the items consume and identified areas where we could potentially reduce energy usage. It was fascinating to see the difference in energy consumption between various devices and how small changes can lead to green practices, such as recycling old equipment and promoting greener transport options.

I also helped run an accessibility workshop during a visit from the CEO of Nexer Group Lars Kry. This was organised by Head of Design Chris and Accessibility Team Lead Danny in the office to help people understand different user needs, show off the great work that the accessibility team do and help people to understand the experiences of individuals with disabilities. This was a great way to wrap up my two weeks within the company!

My work experience has been incredibly eye-opening. By collecting and analysing data, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of our daily choices. The insights gathered will help Nexer Digital implement more sustainable practices, from reducing energy consumption to promoting eco-friendly commuting options. The accessibility lab really underscored the importance of inclusion, and I'm excited to see how these initiatives will continue to evolve and contribute to a greener, more inclusive workplace.
